Mountain Love Song

Motivic Source
Mountain Love Song fortwo violins (2006) was written after a visit to Taiwan and is melodically based on a traditional Chinese/Taiwanese folk tune. The text of the song recalls a young man on one mountaintop singing to his beloved on another. The violins attempt to emulate the feeling of dialog, even echo, while singing to one another. This is not a sad tune, rather one of joy and compassion. The music was originally written for a good friend, Blair Skinner, and his sister and was premiered in a recital at Wheaton College. This version for violin and viola is performed by Michelle Skinner and Nancy Steffa. The version below (for violin and English Horn) was arranged for Catherine Michelsen and Lauren Murray of The Straz Center for Performing Arts, Patel Conservatory.
