Mr. Frog, He Went a-Courtin' (1977)

Mr. Frog

Mr. Frog, He Went a-Courtin'for two euphoniums and two tubas (1977) was written for and won second place in the 1977 UNITUBA (University of Northern Iowa Tubist's Universal Brotherhood Association) composition/arranging contest. The spoken text suggests that four instruments have been entrusted to four musical frogs. Each improvisation on the given melody gradually becomes more and more confused and the final out come is chaos. The piece is restarted and rounded out in a final flourish.

An effective performance of this piece requires musicians with a sense of staging and the ability to improvise on a given melody. (A sense of humor would also be helpful.)
