Three Movements (1982)

II. and III.

The first draft of Three Movements for viola and piano (1982, 2004) was written in Austin, Texas, and was premiered at The University of Texas at Austin by the composer’s wife, Nancy Steffa. It contains elements of jazz, sweeping melodic gestures and rhythmic impulses that exist within a freely atonal environment. The outer two movements mimic a conversation between the two instruments, both playing an equally important role. The middle movement is written for viola solo, rhapsodic in nature, and moves directly into the third and final movement.
